A Gift to Myself: Learning to Receive

A Gift to Myself I’m still fairly new to the TimeBank, but already amazed by how powerful this concept is. In just one service received and a couple I’ve provided, I’ve felt something shift in how I think about community, giving, and receiving. Most recently, I received a craniosacral massage from another member, and I want to share what a gift it was. Her craft is truly an art, and her presence alone is healing. It was the kind of session that helps you discharge and release what isn’t serving. I left feeling lighter, more spacious, more myself. And it only took one exchange to show me what this whole thing is really about. It’s not just an exchange of hours; it’s an opportunity to meet people we might never otherwise cross paths with and to engage with them in real, meaningful ways. Everyone here has so much to offer, and I’m only beginning to discover that. For me, this is also a practice in receiving. So many of us are quick to give but slow to let ourselves be given to. The platform creates a space where receiving is not just allowed but welcomed, and that’s its own kind of growth. You don’t need a long history as part of it to feel the impact. I certainly didn’t. Building community means extending ourselves and meeting others where they are, opening up to new experiences, and letting ourselves be changed a little by what we learn from each other. It takes a willingness to step outside our comfort zones, to be of service, and to let ourselves receive in return. Whether it’s learning a new skill, meeting someone new, or simply connecting more deeply with the people around you, this is an opportunity to try something different. Even a little bit of engagement goes a long way, as I’ve quickly learned. Try it out. Offer something. Ask for something. You may find, like I did, that both are gifts.
